Vietnam Highlights, nine days

Vietnam is seventeen hundred kilometres long and most nine-day itineraries pretend it is not. This one accepts the distance, spends it on two flights rather than four, and gives every base at least two nights.

Why this shape and not another

The common version of this trip adds Sapa or Hue and keeps the same nine days. Both are worth going to and neither fits: Sapa is a five-hour drive each way from Hanoi, and Hue adds a base without adding a region. Cutting them buys you the second night in Hoi An and the night on the water, which is where people actually remember the trip from.

One long drive survives the edit — Hanoi out to the Lan Ha embarkation point, about two and a half hours. It is the price of the bay, and the bay is the reason most people come.

Day by day

Day 1 — Arrive Hanoi

Met at Noi Bai and driven into the Old Quarter, forty minutes when the traffic behaves. Nothing scheduled: most arrivals land in the evening and the first night is for sleeping.

Day 2 — Hanoi on foot

The part of Hanoi worth walking is small and dense. Morning on the Temple of Literature and the Ho Chi Minh complex, afternoon through the thirty-six streets of the Old Quarter where the trades are still grouped street by street. Evening free; the good eating happens on plastic stools after dark.

Day 3 — Hanoi to Lan Ha Bay

Drive east after breakfast and board in the early afternoon. Lan Ha sits immediately south of Ha Long and holds the same karst geology with a fraction of the boat traffic. Kayaking, a swim off the back of the boat, dinner at anchor.

Day 4 — Bay to Hanoi, fly to Da Nang

Back to shore by late morning, drive to Hanoi, evening flight south. Roughly eighty minutes in the air, then thirty to Hoi An.

Day 5 — Hoi An

The old town closes to traffic and is best seen early, before the day trippers arrive from Da Nang. Merchant houses, the covered bridge, and the tailoring streets if you want something made — two full days is the minimum for a fitting and an alteration.

Day 6 — Hoi An, free or My Son

Either a morning at the My Son sanctuary, an hour inland, or a day doing nothing at An Bang beach. We will ask which you want rather than assume.

Day 7 — Fly to Ho Chi Minh City

Late morning flight, ninety minutes. The afternoon is the war history if you want it — the Reunification Palace and the War Remnants Museum sit within walking distance of each other and the second one is difficult.

Multi-tiered pagoda tower and ornate temple building rise above a street in Ho Chi Minh City.

Day 8 — Cu Chi and the city

The tunnels in the morning, ninety minutes out of town, back for an afternoon in District 1 and Cholon. This is the day most people ask to change, and it changes easily.

Day 9 — Depart

Transfer to Tan Son Nhat. Late flights are common out of here, so the room is held until departure where the hotel allows it.

What you should know before booking this one

  • Two internal flights in nine days is our limit, and this route uses both. Adding a third destination means dropping a night somewhere else.
  • The bay night is weather-dependent between June and September. Outside October to April we will say plainly whether the sailing is likely to run.
  • Hoi An floods in the late autumn. In October and November we move the Hoi An nights to Da Nang and drive in, rather than cancel.

Frequently asked questions

Can Sapa be added?
Not inside nine days without losing the bay or a Hoi An night. At eleven days it fits comfortably, with the overnight train up and a drive back.
Is the overnight boat a private charter?
No — it is a cabin on a small boat, typically eight to sixteen cabins. A private charter is possible and roughly triples the cost of that night.
How fixed is the day-by-day?
Not very. The Cu Chi day and the Hoi An free day are the two most often swapped, and swapping them costs nothing if you tell us before we book.
Which direction is better, north to south or south to north?
North to south, for weather and for the shape of the trip. The bay works better early, and ending in Ho Chi Minh City puts you at the better-connected airport for the flight home.
