Why this shape and not another
The version of this trip sold most often adds Ho Chi Minh City and keeps ten days. That gives you four flights and two half-days lost. Dropping the south buys the bay night and a third day at Angkor, which is the part people remember.
Day by day
Day 1 — Arrive Hanoi
Transfer into the Old Quarter. Nothing scheduled.
Day 2 — Hanoi
The old city on foot, the Temple of Literature, and the Ho Chi Minh complex. Evening free.
Day 3 — Hanoi to Lan Ha Bay
Drive east, board after lunch. Kayaking, a swim, dinner at anchor among the karsts.
Day 4 — Bay to Hanoi
Ashore late morning, back to Hanoi for the afternoon and evening.
Day 5 — Fly to Siem Reap
Direct flight, around two hours. The airport sits well outside town, so allow an hour in. Afternoon free.

Day 6 — Angkor, the main circuit
Angkor Wat at sunrise if you want it, the walled city of Angkor Thom and the Bayon faces, then Ta Prohm under the fig roots.
Day 7 — Angkor, the outer temples
Banteay Srei's carved sandstone, an hour out, and the quieter eleventh-century sites where you will be nearly alone.
Day 8 — Siem Reap to Phnom Penh
Six hours by road along the lake, or fifty minutes in the air. Afternoon in the capital.

Day 9 — Phnom Penh
The Royal Palace and the National Museum in the morning. Tuol Sleng and Choeung Ek in the afternoon for those who want them — they are harrowing, and entirely optional.
Day 10 — Depart
Transfer to the airport.
What you should know before booking this one
- Angkor passes are bought in person on the day, with your photograph taken at the ticket office. Budget the extra half-hour on the first temple morning.
- The Siem Reap to Phnom Penh road runs six hours. If that is unappealing we fly it and you lose only the lake scenery.
- The genocide sites are not suitable for young children and we will plan around them if you say so.
